The Blue Heaven Woodworks Process:
Quality Construction Using Sustainable Methods

Sawing A LogMy philosophy at Blue Heaven Woodworks is simple: I build quality products while minimizing harm to the environment.

Harvesting Wood

While wood is a necessary component of my business, I do not seek to harvest wood just because I need it for my work. Occasionally, I get wood that is reclaimed from buildings that are being torn down. Rare woods, such as American Chestnut, sometimes become available in this manner. I also search the surrounding area for standing dead trees or I get them from landowners who are clearing land. I responsibly remove the trees from the property and haul the logs to my shop. I saw them on my "woodmizer" sawmill and place the wood in my solar kiln for drying. When it is ready, I store it in a separate building. My customers then choose from my selection the wood that will best suit their purpose.

Wood ToolsBuilding Your Project

I use a combination of classic and modern woodworking techniques to complete your project. Power tools like saws and sanders are often needed to precisely cut and properly shape a design, but at other times traditional wood tools such as planes, chisels, and sandpaper are what is required to give the piece a rustic, handcrafted look. When building furniture, I prefer to use mortise and tenon joints to give the piece strength, durability, and beauty associated with handcrafted work. However, I do use screws and nails when necessary.

I often like to leave the wood in its natural state, but I offer a variety of oils, stains and varnishes to protect the wood and/or give it character.
